大致上，英研所的考試是以問答題為主要決勝關鍵，故同學的分析及英文作文能力是十分重要的。但近年來，各大學（尤其是北部的大學），皆有將問答題「打散」的趨勢；也就是說，原本一題20～30分的題目已經很少見了，取而代之的是一題10～15分的問答題以及愈來愈多的ID題。在文學史的背景知識日趨重要之下，在學校中表現好的同學並不一定在此類考試中佔優勢（因為學校裡所上的作品有限），同學仍須在課外自我加強文學常識才足以應考。
