Landscape Architecture Is an Excellent Career in 2006
剛出爐的US News & World Report選出了2006年的絕佳事業( Excellent Career for 2006 )，報告中列出了十六個不同的行業，並且簡單說明為何這些工作是好事業，景觀建築師赫然與工程師、藥劑師、教授等並列於2006的絕佳工作的行列之中之一。儘管近年來景觀建築專業越來越受到重視，不過相對於建築這個有著悠久歷史的設計專業，景觀建築仍是比較弱勢，而剛畢業的景觀新鮮人也苦哈哈的領著相對的低薪，靠著興趣和熱情在這行持續努力著。
當我看到這則報導，第一個反應就是「怎麼可能」？從事景觀建築這一行的人，雖然有著興趣和熱情，但面對許多的現實環境面，也有著許多埋怨，因此許多人不會否認，景觀建築仍然是比較邊緣的設計領域。那為什麼景觀建築憑什麼被評選為絕佳行業呢？根據US News & World Report的理由，景觀建築師得已被評選為Excellent Career，是因為景觀建築師比起其他設計專業者，更能夠在其事業的初期就能夠實際參與並且主導設計。
這對於從事設計的人而言的確是很誘人的。選擇從事設計業的人，包括本人在內，多多少少都希望能夠發揮自己的想法和創意，能夠實際「設計」並且看到自己設計的作品被建造出來，是很多人選擇這一行的最重要原因之一。擁有較多的「設計滿足」，的確值得我們從事景觀建築業的人暗暗高興，就當作薪水不高的補償好了。
US News & World Report的客觀性是見仁見智。不過，景觀建築同行的伙伴們，大家繼續加油吧！我們還需要更多的努力，才能讓這個專業得到應有的重視。希望下一次，當景觀建築師再度被選為絕佳行業的理由，會是因為我們這個專業對環境和社會的重要性、以及所得到的社會尊重。

Landscape architect. There are ordinary architects (see below), and then there are neat niches like this. Because most landscape architecture projects don't have as many components as the design for a building, young landscape architects may get to design entire projects. Also, the training is shorter: You typically can get a job with just a bachelor's degree and an internship of a year or less.

US News and World Report is the king of “Best” lists. Go to its website and you’ll find everything from Best Graduate Schools, to Best Hospitals, to Best Places to Work in the Federal Government. The magazine’s most recent list is Excellent Careers for 2006, in which it ranks careers as “excellent,” “good,” “fair,” or “poor.” Well, the magazine rates landscape architecture as an “excellent” career based on the fact that landscape architects often get to design projects earlier in their careers than other design professionals. As for architecture? Well, that’s only a “fair” career.
