It has become fashionable for baseball people to equate a team's chances of
playing - and winning - in October with the Big Three of their starting
rotation. Gotta have three potentially dominant starters, they say, and indeed
the Mets' drive to make a deadline trade is fueled by their concern over who
will start Game 3 of the playoffs.

Funny, nobody has talked much about the current Yankee rotation in terms of a
Big Three, but maybe it's time.

Mike Mussina has been on that level all season, Randy Johnson seems to putting
together the same second-half resurgence that carried the Yankees past the Red
Sox last year and perhaps most significant, Chien-Ming Wang is looking more and
more like an ace every day.

His dazzling two-hit shutout of the Devil Rays last night was proof just how
good Wang can be when he can harness the explosive movement on his power sinker
and throw it for strikes.

After all, he recorded 18 ground-ball outs in the 6-0 victory, which basically
meant he overmatched the D-Rays with his sinker. It was a game that may vault
Wang into the spotlight, but he's 12-4 this season, so it's not as if this was
a breakthrough performance.

same level with Mussina and Johnson, which is why he was making a case for

"I can't think of many other teams who have had three guys that have been as

Torre was quickly asked if he was saying his Big Three was as good as that of

For the moment, Santana and Liriano put the Twins in a class by themselves.
Otherwise, if you're choosing a Big Three, you can at least make an argument
for the Yankees over the others, largely because Wang seems to be getting
better all the time.

After an uneven first couple of months, Wang has had only one bad start over
his last 10, and that wasn't horrible as he gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings

ERA.

At this point, in fact, ranking the Yankees' Big Three may depend more on
Johnson than Wang. If you believe Johnson will continue to at least resemble
his old Big Unit self in the coming weeks, then it's easy to put the Yankees
up there with just about anybody.

持他的巨怪本色的話，那洋基就比其他隊的三巨頭來的優。
The Yankees surely want to believe. Gary Sheffield has watched from a distance,
as he recovers from wrist surgery, and for what it's worth, he believes the
Yankees are playing at their highest level of the season, largely because
Johnson has found his old form.

"Looking at him now," Sheffield said yesterday, "it looks like he's found that
arm slot for his slider. If he has a good slider, he can still be dominant,

It doesn't mean the Yankees suddenly have solved all of their pitching issues
, as the problems in the No. 4 and 5 spots pose the question of whether the
Yankees have enough depth in their rotation to win a pennant race.
不過這也不代表洋基解決了投手的問題，尤其是第四、五號投手常常擺爛，這也使得洋基
是否能贏得最後冠軍的因素。
If they do get to the postseason, however, their Big Three might just be good
enough to match up with anyone. You couldn't have suggested such a thing even
a month ago.
